Most people think of volunteering & immediately think "I don't have time." This is true - we're all stretched & although volunteering is an awesome way to give back -- other, simpler ways exist as well.
Often times the people we treat the worst are the people we love the most. How about giving back to your family? For example, when you are tired after a long day and your child wants to play... instead of saying, "not now", "I'm too tired", or "I have to work"... how about stopping and spending the time. Bless each of your kids with 15-20 minutes of one-on-one time each day. No cell phones, no interruptions. Just you & them (let them choose the activity). What about blessing your spouse/significant other? Try saying a kind word or giving them a night off from chores. What about blessing yourself occasionally? Take a hot bath, read a book, take a walk on a beach or in a park. If it's really bad, try just sitting in the bathroom alone for 10 minutes with the door locked. Give yourself a rest.
Sharing time with your family, community, and church is always a huge emotional booster. If you are not able to do that at this point in your life - that is fine. No big deal. There are other ways to "volunteer" on a daily basis. Open a door for an elderly person; give up that coveted parking space; smile at the person serving you; leave an extra tip; give someone a compliment; say hello to the sales clerk (before you bombard them with issues!)
Integrate the blessings into your daily life. Make it part of your daily routine. Watch it change your life. What you put out, you get back 100 fold. Try it. It will change your life. It will certainly improve your relationships with your family members. Better yet, you will like yourself again.
