Healing
Healing – what is it? It is defined as restore to original...to make whole. What is healing following an abortion? Restoring your peace, living in joy, dropping the guilt and shame, giving back…getting back into life.
How do you get there? It is an individual journey, sometimes challenging and worth the time and energy.
If you are really emotional and struggling, look for resources to help you with the immediate trauma. It is a traumatic event for many women. You are dealing with the emotional, spiritual and physical aftermath all at one time. Seek counsel with a non-judgmental, loving and supportive person (family or friend) or seek professional care. There are a few resources available on the resources page (we do not endorse any one site) but help is available for free. Post-abortion programs are available as well. Get the help you need if you are stuck in pain. You do not need to punish yourself by living with the emotional baggage. Let it go! If you can’t, get help to dump it.
Take care of yourself. You are a priority!
Stand in agreement with God. As the positive affirmation section reveals, God does not want you to live in pain or misery. God is not angry. God still loves you. You can not run from God – try running to Him. Maybe this is the time to start talking to God. Ask Him for help as you seek outside counsel as well. He can heal, He will heal. Let him heal your heart. If you decide to carry the pain forever, you will. That is not what He wants but He gives us a choice to ask and receive or not. Ask! Make a decision to re-gain your peace and joy.
Sound impossible. Nothing is impossible with God’s strength and direction! Do not limit God. Do not put Him in a box. Let Him help. He will meet you where ever you are. You can stop and talk with Him in the car, bathroom, kitchen, at work…He is there. He is waiting to help you heal.
Make the decision to be happy again. Make the decision to forgive yourself. Make the decision to stop punishing yourself. You need to work at this too. You take a step and God will follow. Emotions are feelings. Stand on the truth, not on what others say or even what you say about yourself right now.
- Know you are valuable;
- you are special;
- you are talented;
- you are a wonderful person;
- you are still you.
As you chip away at the pain, sometimes chunks fall or sometimes a stone. Everyone is different. Everyone heals a little differently. Make it your goal to heal though. Work at it like you would any goal. Make it your goal to drop the pain, the guilt, the shame, the stigma… You will always remember your child. As a Christian, you will meet that child again. Dedicate your healing to that child. Do not let your heart harden with the pain. Think about it. Why not make your life a testimony to their memory?

Next Steps
Step One: Ask God into Your Life: You can't earn forgiveness from God. You can't pay for your forgiveness from God. You can only receive it, by faith, through the grace and mercy of God. If you want to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and receive forgiveness from God, here is prayer you can pray. Saying this prayer or any other prayer will not save you. It is only trusting in Jesus Christ can provide forgiveness of sins. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your forgiveness. "God, I know that I have sinned against You and am deserving of punishment. But Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness! Amen!" source: askquestions.org
If you are saved, rejoice! Welcome to the Kingdom! Go tell someone!! Celebrate a new beginning in your life! You did it. You took the step - now let God take control!
Step 2: Go to Church this Sunday (no excuses - find a church with a service time that meets some schedule - some churches even meet on Saturday nights now). Just pick one. If you do not like it, keep trying a different one every week until you find one where: they preach the word of God, they practice the word of God, they are friendly & supportive, you feel comfortable & as importantly, your kids (if relevant) like the Sunday School Program. Make sure your kids get saved. Raise them up according to God's principles. God will work through them in great ways. Introduce them to the Lord. Buy them a children's bible (Walmart has several great versions) & read it to them every night. Learn the bible stories together. Pray with them at night. Let them see you lean on the Lord. Let them hear you pray. Pray over them every day for safety & health. Let them hear you thank the Lord for all the good stuff in your life. Let them hear you thank the Lord in the "tough" times because you have the faith that if God leads you to it, He will lead you through it! Say Grace before you eat. Raise them in a Christian household. Give them the ultimate gift - Introduce them to God!
Step 3: Once you find a church family, tithe (give 10‰ of your salary to the church). Don't wait. Think about it: when you go out to dinner, it is customary to leave 15-20% tip. God provides us with: 24/7 Services; Boundless Love; Unconditional Forgiveness; Security; Peace; Guidance; Discernment; Eternity with Him in Heaven...give Him 10% of your salary. He will give it back to you 100 fold. No question. If for some reason you prefer to give it to a christian charity, do that instead. But do not cheat God! HE is deserving of much more.
Step 4: Buy a calendar based "devotional book" and read it every day (or go to a local church and ask them for a bible - free!). Begin to learn God's word. You will come to rely on it daily. You need to do something for 6 weeks before it becomes a habit, so stick with it! Take even 5-10 minutes a day to be with the Lord in prayer and read a simple, single scripture verse. How much time do we spend on the phone talking to our friends or watching TV! Give God some time each day. I guarantee if you make it a habit, you cannot make it through the day without that experience. You will yearn for more. Ten minutes can easily turn into 15, 20, 30+ when you are quiet and ask God to talk with you. Once you practice, you will hear His voice through the Holy Spirit. Ask Him questions. Thank Him. Praise Him.
Or Option 2: Use your commute time: Buy a Praise and Worship CD (check out some of the new young artists). Listen to it every day. Play it in the car. Make the commute your divine time with the Lord. Use the travel time to travel spiritually. You can also get some great faith based audio books or an audio version of the bible.
Step 5: Pray all day long: Make it a habit: stop and think - when did I last pray ? If it was more than an hour ago, pray again. God is wherever you are. Your alter is in your mind. Go to Him in your head. Ask Him anything. Tell Him anything. He always listens and never judges. He will be your best friend. He will show you His love. Don't wait until Sunday to pray. Don't wait until you go to bed to pray. Pray before you get out of bed in the morning for health, safety, peace, wisdom...and continue in the shower, the car, your breaks at work, your lunch, your commute home. Not get down on your knees and spend hours (unless you are lead to). Just 30 seconds... something like: Thanks God! Thanks for being in control; or God, send the Holy Spirit now! I need help, now!; or SOS, Lord. Help!!; or Lord, you are awesome. Thank you for blessing me!; or Lord, here comes the enemy again - the tapes are starting again. I feel lousy about myself again Lord. Send me peace now Lord.
Whatever you say, your words will please God. The words are not what God listens to, He listens to your heart. He knows your heart. He created you. Be honest and just express yourself. Learn to lean on God, not yourself anymore . Believe in His word, even though you may not feel it now. A feeling is not the same as hope. Hope comes from God. Hope comes from faith. Hope comes from His word. Hope comes from the Holy Spirit. Feeling are fickle. Do not trust you emotions, trust God. Believe in him with all your heart, all your mind, all your strength, all your soul (Mark 12:30)
Overwhelmed? Make this the first bible verse that you memorize: Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Say it whenever you need strength. (It was written by Paul while in prison for being a Christian.)
Worried? Read Philippians 4:6 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer & supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts & minds through Christ Jesus."
Guilty? Read John 8:1-11 "He who is without sin among you - let him cast the first stone."
My final prayer for you - Philippians 1:9-11 "This my prayer for you: that your love will grow more & more; that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love; that you will see the difference between good & bad and will choose the good; that you will be pure and without wrong for the coming of Christ; that you will do many good things with the help of Christ to bring glory and praise to God."
